As we move into another winter here in the Midwest, it’s important that you know how to keep your pool protected, and part of knowing how to do this is being knowledgeable about the products available to you.

One of those products are winter pool covers—something that many companies produce in a variety of different materials and styles. A top company in the pool industry that manufactures such covers is Anchor Industries Inc.—a company whose products we recommend and use here at Royal Pools and More.

Anchor Industries Inc. has a number of different pool covers available, but we’re just going to be focusing on the Defender Mesh cover in this article. If you’d like to read about another, check out our article about the Anchor 5 Star Winter Safety Cover.

We want to give you all of the information we can to make sure you’re educated about what this cover offers to you. That way, since you have this information, you can compare it to other covers and make an informed decision about which cover is the best option for you.

But, before we get into the cover itself, we want to give you a little background on Anchor Industries Inc.!

Anchor Industries Inc. History

Anchor Industries Inc. was founded in 1892—128 years ago!

Its original name was Anchor Supply Company, beginning as a riverboat supply house on the Ohio River. The company supplied products such as oil, groceries, paint, and eventually canvas goods to the steamboat industry.

In the 120+ years of experience, Anchor Industries Inc. has grown into one of the leading manufacturers of event/wedding tents, outdoor awnings, fabricshade solutions, fire shelters, custom fabric products, and of course, inground pool covers.

The company currently calls a 350,000 square foot warehouse in Evansville, Indiana its home where it employs over 300 workers.

And now, in the year 2020 with over a century in business, Anchor Industries Inc is a fourth-generation family-owned business!

Cover Features

Cover Material

The Defender Mesh cover is made of a tight-weave poly fabric that can block up to 98% of sunlight, meaning that the cover can block almost all Ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Additionally, the poly fabric reduces the risk of algae growth in the pool, which is a common issue in all types of pools, especially vinyl liner pools. And although this fabric doesn’t provide a 100% guarantee that algae won’t grow in the pool, it’s definitely a good insurance policy to battle against it. Plus, when you add the fact that the tightly weaved fabric prevents the loss of chemicals from the water, your pool has a greater chance of enduring the winter well and being ready to open the next summer.

Webbing Structure

Compared to all other inground pool covers available to the general public, Anchor Industries is the only company to sew webbing on the bottom of a mesh cover.

By doing this, the cover is given extra support that other covers don’t have. And since the Defender Mesh cover has that extra support, it is able to remain flatter, smoother and keep the aesthetic that you imagine a pool cover to have. This means that when debris finds its way to the cover, it is able to be removed easier by you or blown away easier since the cover won’t sink in towards the pool.

Springs and Anchors

To connect and secure the pool cover to the surrounding patio, the Defender Mesh cover is equipped with heavy-duty springs and brass anchors.

The heavy-duty springs are equipped around the perimeter of the cover and stretch it from the center outwards. This allows the cover to have a tight fit across the pool when finished.

The springs attach to brass anchors located around the patio that are spaced out between 3-4 feet, reducing the amount needed.

With the combination of these springs and anchors, the cover will have a snug fit, reducing the risk of damage or moving out of place.
