Up next in our inground swimming pool rules and regulations, we’re taking a look at those put in place by the town of Schererville, IN.
It’s imperative that both you and your pool builder are aware of every regulation placed upon inground swimming pools by your respective town (or county if you live in an unincorporated area) so that the construction process can be completed legally.
Every town has their own regulations, and no matter how small the differences are between them, failure to comply can result in significant issues.
So, we’ve listed all of the regulations unique to Schererville, IN so residents can be aware of every specification their pool needs to meet down to the smallest detail.
Pool Regulations
- Every portion of pool must be at least 10 feet from any side property line, rear property line, building line, or other location prohibited by the Schererville Zoning Ordinance
- Pumps, filters, or other water sanitization equipment must be located at least 10 feet from the side and rear property lines, building line, or other location prohibited by the Schererville Zoning Ordinance
- Circulation of water must be maintained by pump system
- Side and end walls must be vertical to a depth of at least 6 feet or have a slope that meets 1 of the following criteria:
- The pool may be vertical for 30 inches from the water level: below the 30 inches, the wall may be curved to the bottom of the pool with a radius at any point equal to the difference between that point and 30 inches
- If the depth is exactly 6 feet, the slope of the pool must not be less than 1 foot horizontal in 6 feet vertical
- The slope of a point in a pool that is less than 5 feet deep must not be more than 1 foot in 10 feet; the maximum slope accepted in a point where water is 5 feet or more in depth must not exceed 1 foot in 2 feet
- An inground pool must have 1 of the following:
- Fencing at least 4 feet above ground level with self-latching gate that completely encloses the pool OR
- Automatic safety cover
- At least 2 forms of exits such as steps or ladders
Requirements for Construction
- Zoning and Building Permits obtained from Schererville Building Department
- ALL drawings and plans for construction, installation, enlargement, or alteration of pool presented to Zoning and Building Inspector for approval
- Must portray relevant lot lines and setback distances
- Must include information about pool construction, walkway, fencing, water supply system, drainage and water disposal systems, and other aspects related to pool
- 2 Plats of Survey (at least 1 original)
- Legal description of property
- Flood Zone Designation
- Distances and bearings of lot sizes with:
- Total square footage
- Utility easements
- Streets
- Alleys
- Sidewalks
- Building set-back lines
- Side yards
- Rear yards
- Width of lots at building set-back lines
- Lot grades
- Lot number
- Street names
- Lot addresses
- Complete list of contractors and sub-contractors for project

- Building Pre-Pour
- Rough Building
- Foundation
- Underground Plumbing
- Rough Plumbing
- Rough Electrical
- Building Final
- Final Plumbing
- Final Electric
Homeowners Association Requirements
It’s important to keep in mind that if you live in a neighborhood part of a Homeowners Association (HOA), you’ll have some regulations to adhere to as well.
These rules and regulations will be an important part of your pool project in addition to those put in place by your respective town or county. So, just be aware of your neighborhood’s affiliation with an HOA and their swimming pool regulations if applicable.
